Piltown 3 - 16 Bennettsbridge 2 - 11
A big win at home over Bennettsbridge by 8 points in a tough entertaining game on a fine Sunday morning for Piltown as they built on a shaky start to turn things round.
And it was a shaky start, as the away side had a goal and a point on the board within 3 minutes . The point coming from attacking Midfielder Katie Mulcahy , the goal from wing forward Lucy Walsh. The best start the away side could have wished for.
Bennettsbridge were getting great joy through the middle through Lauren Shehan and wing forward Holly Ryan as their pace and movement was so hard to counteract , but Robbie and Chloe on the line saw it, and acted on it, and it made the difference. Aine Doyle stood over her first free of the day, and it went over the bar at the Road end. Leah Cooney got her first of the day in the 7th minute as the Piltown ship steadied and was matching the away side.
It was even steadier when Aine Doyle found Antonia Power on the 14, Antonia beat her marker and hit a good strike that ricocheted off Bridge keeper Laura Duggan and into the net , what a turnaround after 11 minutes. The Bridge struck back with two points from Holly Ryan , as the game swung from end to end. Heather Phelan and Leah Cooney swung over another couple of points, before a flurry of action.
Kate Anthony having another fine game, found Aine Doyle who raced towards goal, the sliothar popped free after a challenge and Aine reacted by pulling on it on the ground, and it went in by the butt of the right hand post ( similar ,but not the same , as John Fentons goal for Cork in the All Ireland Final all those years ago) .
The away side reacted by going down and scoring their own goal from distance as a speculative shot from Lauren Skehan deceived Danielle OBrien in the Piltown goal and the game was suddenly level again.
Not for long, straight from Danielles puckout to Leah Cooney, Leah found Heather , and Heather released Grace Farrell, and she made no mistake, blasting to the net. A crazy few minutes as the game ebbed and flowed up and down the pitch. Lauren Skehan scored a point for the visitors, Aine Doyle got two, and then just before half time , a penalty.
Lisa Norris adjudged to have fouled, and ref Flynn gave it. Holly Ryan stood over it and went to her left , Danielle OBrien moved to her right blocked and scooped it away. A vital save.

Aine Doyle gave her side a great start, with fours points in a row to extend the lead, Holly Ryan and a double from Aoibhe Ryan was the reply. Piltown had their tails up now , lots of effort, some great play. Grace Farrell and another free from Aine kept the score rising for the home side. But by no means were the Bridge just sitting back, they were dropping dangerous ball in and around the square, winning second balls was crucial, and when they did win it, they were forcing big blocks from Katelyn Moore, Lisa Norris and Rachel OShea, and if they missed it, they now had Rachel Tennyson minding the net. Rachel pulled of a couple of crucial saves to keep out the attackers.
Piltown were exploiting the spaces on the big pitch. Leah Cooney and Aine Doyle using the ball well, as was a deeper lying Heather Phelan. Doyle found Cooney with one of those diagonal balls from left to right wing, and Leah stepped inside and put the ball over the bar. Kaleigh OShea and Grace Farrell got a point apiece as the home side lengthened their lead towards the end. But the Bridge were still dropping ball in, still creating goal chances. Orlaith OConnell scoring a free, and then deep into injury time Holly Ryan blasted a screamer towards the top right corner from distance that just went wide.
Our girls went on to claim a very emphatic win after a very entertaining game.
